A Criminologist in Florence: Dr. Tahaney Alghrani's EuroCrim Experience

Hugh Baird University Centre Criminology Tutor, Dr Tahaney Alghrani, recently visited Florence to attend the EuroCrim Conference. She tells us about her experience and what she learned from her time in Italy.

As the Criminology Lead at Hugh Baird University Centre, I had the experience of attending the EuroCrim Conference 2023. The event drew in over 2000 delegates from all corners of the globe, and it unfolded across three stunning venues in Florence: the Palazzo dei Congressi, Palazzo degli Affari, and Educatorio di Fuligno. This not only gave me a taste of Florence's historic charm but also a front-row seat to groundbreaking criminological discussions.

Over the course of the weekend, I delved into a diverse array of presentations, engaging roundtable discussions, and dynamic 'author meets critics' sessions that spanned over 65 key criminology topics. These ranged from theoretical debates and epistemological discussions to practical issues like police stop and search tactics, victimology, and the complexities of imprisonment. The depth and breadth of discussions across areas such as restorative justice, decolonisation, state and environmental crimes, as well as historical criminology, were particularly pertinent to the modules we teach on the Criminology courses. The insights I gained are ones I'm eager to share with my students.

The conference was not just about discussions; it was also a treasure trove of resources. The bookstands scattered across the venues were adorned with the latest criminological literature, many volumes of which I've since added to our university library to enrich our students' learning and research. I even captured photos of the event's posters, which will spark further discussion in our classrooms.

The closing of the conference was marked by a farewell dinner at the Palazzo de Borghese, an evening that provided an excellent opportunity to network with my peers in the criminology field. Reflecting on the experience, I am filled with gratitude for the chance to discuss incredible research and connect with criminologists worldwide. For anyone with a vested interest in criminology, I cannot recommend attending this conference highly enough.

At Hugh Baird University Centre, we are proud to offer a Criminology Foundation Degree and a Criminology BA Top Up, both crafted to provide an understanding of the multifaceted nature of crime and prepare students for a variety of careers in the justice system.
