Sophie is a cut above the rest for Toni & Guy
Former Hugh Baird College student Sophie Jones proved she is a cut above the rest as she recently landed a job as a stylist with world-renowned hairdressing brand Toni & Guy.
Sophie, who was a pupil at Bellerive Catholic College, came to Hugh Baird College to study the Level 2 Creative Media Make Up qualification and then progressed on to the Level 3 Hairdressing course.
Sophie said:
I’ve always wanted to work for a leading salon brand like Toni & Guy and it’s been a dream come true to start my career with them. I was up against twenty other interviewees, including Toni & Guy’s own apprentices, I cried when they told me I got the job!
The 19 year old from Vauxhall, believes the extra industry related activities and work-based skills that she undertook on her course at Hugh Baird College really helped her stand out from the crowd when she was going through the interview process for the role.
Sophie added:
I had lots of external industry training on the courses; workshops with L’Oreal, Master of Barbering and Voodoo stylists and even confidence building sessions. At Hugh Baird College I was encouraged to develop my own client base and this really helped as I got to practice skills on paying clients.
The support I got from my tutors was incredible. I’d like to thank my tutor, Danielle Shaw, who always went out of her way to help and advise me, I’ll always be grateful to her.
Sophie, who starts her job this week, shares some advice for current and future students:
Make sure you have a wide and varied skillset, soak up everything your tutors teach you and go that extra mile by watching YouTube and Instagram tutorial videos to pick up on the in-trend styles.
