Hugh Baird College’s A-level campus gets a makeover

Hugh Baird College’s South Sefton Campus, home to the College’s A-level provision, has recently undergone a makeover. The College commissioned local Artist, Jazz Stan, to create a mural across the ground floor atrium area of the campus.

Liverpool based mural artist Jessica Arrowsmith Stanley, aka Jazz Stan, works with a mix of media in a diverse range of styles and sizes. A fusion of fine art technique and contemporary sensibilities underpins her aesthetic, resulting in bold, engaging works.

The large mural commissioned at the campus features figurative elements, to symbolise expression and the ‘students’ voice’.

I remember what it was like to be a student, I was a little lost and confused about what to do after finishing school. But if I’d have seen something so bold and vivid around a campus like this, it would have really inspired me to pursue my creative career much sooner. Art doesn’t only brighten up a room, it can change your mood, make you feel happy, excited and inspired. That is my goal, if one person is inspired – my job is done, and if that person then goes on to have a career in the creative industry, then even better.

Joe Poole, Hugh Baird College’s Director of Curriculum at the South Sefton Campus, said:

The atrium space in our Sixth Form Centre is a place for our learners to relax, eat and carry out independent study or group work. It's a really important part of the day to day experience that our learners have, and the go to area when they are not in lessons. Since joining the College, I have been keen to add some colour to the walls in this area to brighten up this space and make it more vibrant.

I visited the Baltic Market earlier in the year and the artwork on the walls jumped out at me and I thought 'we have to have something like that'. I did some research on murals and artists in the Liverpool area and everything pointed towards Jazz Stan. I'm absolutely delighted that she was able to do it, and am over the moon with the end product. I hope our learners love it as much as I do!

Today you'll find Jazz’s work on walls all over the city, from the Baltic Market to Pins Social Club, 54 on Seel Street and in popular cocktail bar Jaloux. She has also painted murals in venues across the North West, in London and as far away as a hair salon in Dubai.
