Owen selected for England Karate Squad

Owen Stow, aged 15 from Walton, has been selected to represent England as part of the junior Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) squad.

Owen, who studies the Hospitality & Catering pathway at Hugh Baird College’s 14-16 College, has trained in the martial art at the Malvern Karate Club in Dovecot for the past three years and has quickly risen to the black belt 1st Dan rank.

Following selection trials in Liverpool, Owen, alongside other Malvern Karate Club members, were successful in gaining places on the Junior and Senior KUGB England squads.

Owen and his fellow squad members now have the opportunity to compete for a place in the European Championships at the KUGB Grand Slam in Chesterfield on the 23rd February.

Hugh Baird 14-16 College Assistant Head, Susan McKie, said:

We are extremely proud of Owen for being selected to the England squad. Owen is an exemplary student and testament to the saying that if you work hard enough, you can achieve your goals.

Owen said:

I’m absolutely over the moon to have been selected. I’d like to thank my dad and my instructor at Malvern Karate Club, Chris Cray, for their dedication and support. I’d also like to thank everyone at the Hugh Baird 14-16 College for their encouragement.

I’m really proud to be representing England and I’m looking forward to the Grand Slam event in Chesterfield and fingers crossed I’ll be selected for the European Championships!
