Course Details
Develop your theoretical knowledge and gain real-world practical skills with a Hairdressing Level 2 qualification at Hugh Baird College. With a supportive learning environment and twilight timetables available for adult learners, this course is open to anyone that wants to pursue a career in this exciting industry - whatever your experience level.
What will you learn?
This course covers practical skills and the underlying knowledge of hair science needed to perform commercial hairdressing services to expected industry standards. You’ll start with shampooing sessions and work up to colours, cuts and styling. One of the modules also covers working with electrical equipment, so you’ll get to grips with the basics of wanding and blow drying. Students begin by practising on doll heads, before working their magic on real-life clients.
Real-world experience in our commercial salons
Hugh Baird College is home to five training and commercial salons. You’ll have at least one practical session per week in these salons, providing cuts and colours to real clients that book appointments at the College.
Showcase your talents in competitions
Give your portfolio something extra special by entering competitions to showcase your technical skills and creativity. Competitions are held by awarding bodies, as well as the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists, and L'Oréal. Students also get the opportunity to do free courses with L'Oréal and other external organisations, to further boost their portfolios.
Is this course right for you?
This qualification is open to anyone aged 16+ that wants to pursue a career in employed or self-employed hairdressing.
As long as you have a real interest in hairdressing, no prior experience is needed. The course is also open to adults with other responsibilities, such as work or family. Our new flexible timetable includes evening sessions, “The Twilight Shift”, so you can fit learning around your life.
How will you be assessed?
There are two potential routes to assessment, and we’ll work with students to find the best option for you.
- The VRQ (vocationally related qualification) option is made up of a series of small exams throughout the course. This is a diploma-level option which requires Maths and English at grade 3 or above. You’ll get the chance to re-sit them alongside your qualification if necessary.
- The technical option brings three elements together: two written exams and a synoptic holistic assessment, where you’ll bring a concept to life under observation. To achieve this extended diploma, students will also need to have a Maths and English qualification at grade 4 or above.
