Course Details

This Level 1 course is an introduction to all things carpentry and joinery. With dedicated support for all students, and the chance to put your skills to the test in the community, Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 is a great move. Whether you’re just starting your career or are looking for a change in direction, enrol at Hugh Baird College today.

What will you learn?

This is a foundational level course that introduces students to every aspect of the trade. Combining site and architectural joinery, we cover basic hand tool skills using power tools and small machinery.

Although there’s lots of practical-based learning, you’ll build your theroetical knowledge of the industry, too. This includes health and safety, pathways to development and career opportunities, construction principles and the foundations of working with trades.

Building the community

Students on the Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery course can get involved with local projects, where they’ll develop their skills and play a part in the community. Past students have worked with huge companies like Starship Group on modular build projects. This involved building a flat-pack house using modern construction styles, while linking up with plumbers, bricklayers, carpenters and joiners to bring the whole thing together.

From charity projects to refurbishments for the local council, and labour work on a farm, there are plenty of chances for students to step out of the classroom and gain real-world experience. You’re also welcome to work on your own project and can take home whatever you make.

Unrivalled support and social well-being

You can count on dedicated support from our tutors. We place a strong focus on extra support for special educational needs, and can shape the assessments around student requirements.

As a course that attracts a mixed group of ages and genders, there’s a great social aspect that students tend to enjoy.

Is this course right for you?

The Level 1 course is open to both males and females aged 16 and above. We don’t ask for experience or qualifications, as long as you show a clear drive to work in the industry.

Older students may need to obtain funding to enrol on the course, but we can provide further guidance on this. You can study towards Maths and English GCSE if you don’t already have at least grade 4.

How will you be assessed?

The course is made up of a mix of technical assessments and two online tests. You’ll also complete three assessment booklets (timed tests) throughout the year.
