World renowned make up artist shares Kuoni secrets with undergraduates

Undergraduates at the Hugh Baird University Centre were delighted to welcome internationally renowned make up artist, Karla Powell, recently for a masterclass in lip art design.

The Hugh Baird University Centre undergraduates are all studying towards a Foundation Degree in Creative Make Up Design and Practice, which is validated by the University of Central Lancashire.

As well as telling them about her background and career, Karla used images from her recent campaign for luxury travel brand Kuoni to explain her design process. The stunning images were created to promote holidays to the Maldives with a brief based on Maldivian tropical fish. Karla told the students about her initial concepts for the Kuoni brief and how she developed them into the final dramatic looks. The undergraduates were also treated to two lip art demonstrations showcasing techniques to produce perfect lip lines and detail.

As an award winning fashion, portrait and beauty make up artist, Karla’s work has taken her to Europe and the USA. Her portfolio includes work with celebrities and many of the world’s leading make up brands. Her most recent work includes project managing and directing campaign shoots for brands such as Magnum, MUA Cosmetics and Kuoni. An avid social media user, Karla’s blog has a permanent position on Tumblr’s Beauty Spotlight alongside top beauty brands.

Speaking after the masterclass, she said:

I was delighted to be invited to do a masterclass at the Hugh Baird University Centre. It’s great to have the chance to inspire the next generation of make up artists and to share my experiences of this vibrant and exciting industry.

Undergraduate, Carla Kelly said:

I have loved watching Karla at work today. We’ve really been given an insight into how she creates her amazing looks. Karla has even agreed to mentor me next year as part of my course modules and it is such an honour to get the chance to learn from someone who has done so well in the industry that we’re all aiming for.
