Students take emotional trip to Auschwitz
Students and staff from Hugh Baird College recently made an emotional educational trip to Nazi Concentration Camp, Auschwitz in Poland in order to gain a deeper understanding of what happened during the Holocaust.
Students and staff from Hugh Baird College recently made an emotional educational trip to Nazi Concentration Camp, Auschwitz in Poland in order to gain a deeper understanding of what happened during the Holocaust.
The trip was organised and run by The Holocaust Educational Trust. The Trust is an organisation that works alongside schools and colleges in order to educate young people all over the globe on the Holocaust. The organisation trains and supports hundreds of teachers every year in order to raise awareness of the event across various age groups. The group also work with parliament and the media to make sure that communities have a well-rounded understanding of the Holocaust.
In order for the students to gain a full experience and broad understanding during their trip, the group attended a seminar to examine pre-war Jewish life before they left.
One of the most difficult parts of the trip was when the group heard testimony from a Holocaust survivor on what life was like in the camp. After this emotional, first hand insight, there was an opportunity for the students to ask questions and reflect on the atrocities committed.
Hugh Baird College Level 3 Health and Social Care student, Sarah Lownsbourgh said:
The trip to Auschwitz was an extremely emotional experience. However, I am really glad I took part because it has given me so much insight into what happened during such a huge part of history.

From hearing a Holocaust survivor talk about their harrowing experience, the students were put in a position where they could really understand what survivors had been through. I would like to thank The Holocaust Educational Trust for giving our students this opportunity.
