Student crowned North West Young Painter of the Year

Hugh Baird College apprentice, Isaac Felmingham, took first place this month at the North West heats of prestigious painting and decorating event, the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year Competition.

The competition celebrates emerging talent and aims to encourage young people to pursue a career in the decorating industry. This year’s event was held at Novus offices in Stoke on Trent and brought together students from colleges across the North West.

Isaac’s win earns him a place at the Grand Final in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in November, as well as a cheque for £100.

Eighteen year old Isaac is an apprentice with Signature Living Contractors Limited and attends Hugh Baird College one day a week studying towards a Diploma/NVQ Level 2 in Painting & Decorating. This win comes just a few weeks after he placed 2nd in his category at the North West regional heats of the UK’s largest multi-trade competition, Skillbuild.

Isaac said:

I was surprised but made up to get first place. I’ve really enjoyed entering the competitions and I’ve learned a lot from doing them. It’s good experience for the final in November.

Painting and Decorating tutor, Mark Dillon, said:

Competing at this type of national competition gives the students a valuable insight into the professional standards required in the industry. We’re very proud of Isaac’s achievement and we’ll be cheering him on at the final.
