Student crowned best in North West for second year running
History repeated itself this week at Hugh Baird College as for the second year running, college apprentice, Isaac Felmingham, took home first place at the North West heats of prestigious painting and decorating event, the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year Competition.
The competition celebrates emerging talent and aims to encourage young people to pursue a career in the decorating industry. This year’s event was held at Hugh Baird College and brought together students from colleges across the North West.
Isaac’s win earns him a place at the Grand Final in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in November, as well as a cheque for £100.
Nineteen year old Isaac is an apprentice with Signature Living Contractors Limited and attends Hugh Baird College one day a week studying towards a Diploma/NVQ Level 2 in Painting & Decorating.
Isaac said:
“I was surprised but made up to get first place again for the second year in a row. Since being at the College I’ve learnt so much and I’ve really enjoyed entering the competitions and I’ve gained a lot from doing them. It’s good experience and increases your confidence and self-belief. I am looking forward to the final and hope to improve on where I finished last year.”
Painting and Decorating tutor, Mark Dillon, said:
“I’d like to thank Johnstone’s Paint for the support they are showing young painters and decorators nationwide it is excellent for the industry and we were delighted to play host to such a prestigious event. Competing at this type of national competition gives the students a valuable insight into the professional standards required in the industry. The standard at the competition was extremely high and all those who took place did fantastically well.”
