Hugh Baird College students visit Lord Derby
Hugh Baird College, Public Services students were invited to attend the presentation of a Bronze Armed Forces Covenant Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme to Lord Derby.
Hugh Baird College, Public Services students were invited to attend the presentation of a Bronze Armed Forces Covenant Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme to Lord Derby.
The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme was created in order to encourage employers to support the Reservists, Veterans, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and military spouses or partners through offering employment opportunities. Lord Derby himself was in the Grenadier Guards and has a strong family connection to the military. His father and uncle both fought in the trenches, his uncle receiving a Military Cross and his great grandfather was Secretary of State for War during the First World War.
Hugh Baird College’s Public Services BTEC Diploma course not only covers units such as leadership, government policies and command and control, but also offers students the opportunity to broaden their learning by undertaking a military based Combined Cadet Force course. The Cadet Force course provides students with additional life and employability skills.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the Hugh Baird College students for attending this event. Lord Derby and other dignitaries were very impressed with the turnout and bearing of the cadets, they did the College proud.”

Being able to take part in this event was an opportunity that I couldn't miss out on. It was great to meet Lord Derby and senior members of the military, it allowed me to express my interest in the public services and receive further advice on my future.

Taking the students to meet a group of industry professionals was a great opportunity for all students and staff. We are very proud of our cadets and very pleased to have been selected by Lord Derby to be a part of it. The students had a great opportunity to gain some insight into working for the public services and network amongst others who attended the event.
