Electrical student shines at Apprentice of the Year competition
Talented Hugh Baird College apprentice, Connor Cranham, competed in the prestigious SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition recently at Burnley College.
Talented Hugh Baird College apprentice, Connor Cranham, competed in the prestigious SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition recently at Burnley College.
Connor was one of around ten apprentices from across the North West competing for just one place in the National Finals. The SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competition gives students a chance to be recognised for their hard work and skills, whilst at the same time providing a great opportunity for lecturers and leading industry manufacturers to get involved and support the next generation of installers. During the five hour challenge, they were tasked with installing 3 ring main sockets, 2 radial sockets and one way and two way lighting circuit wired in conduit testing all of their skills and knowledge. Connor did well, almost completing all tasks but despite his efforts, he missed out on going through.
As an apprentice, Connor works for Clare Moss Electrical in Maghull and attends Hugh Baird College one day a week to study towards the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment. He was pleased with his performance at his first competition saying:
I really enjoyed taking part. Going to the competition was a great opportunity for me especially competing against students who’ve been on their courses much longer than I have. I found it challenging but it was worth it and great experience.
Hugh Baird College Curriculum Coordinator for Building Services (Technologies), John Mason, accompanied Connor to Burnley for the competition. He said:
Connor started with us at level 2 and his practical skills and enthusiasm were evident from the start. He progressed onto the level 3 apprenticeship with the same excitement and interest. He was the obvious choice to represent the college and the Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition. We’re proud of how well he did and he is a great role model for other young students.
