Course Details

The Foundation Degree in Creative Makeup Design and Practice offers undergraduates an opportunity to gain fundamental techniques, academic training and key practical skills required to work within the makeup industry.

The course is designed to not only equip undergraduates with the practical skills needed to function successfully, but also to produce artists that can design, inspire and enthuse the larger audience and communicate appropriately within its functioning world.

Learners will gain invaluable knowledge of historical and contemporary contextual and cultural influences to be inspired to design and create for today’s competitive make up industry. Throughout the Creative Makeup Design and Practice course, undergraduates will take part in a range of workshops, practical assessments and design briefs, supported by academic work to produce a portfolio and business plan ready for employment.

You will work on live industry briefs linking with employers and will develop skills by working towards national and international competition briefs. You will be learning skills relating to make up in the editorial, fashion, photographic, TV/Film and the commercial sector. This progresses to theatrical, illusion and special effects makeup.

External industry guest speakers will enhance your experience further allowing you to develop a current awareness of trends and products. Tutors are active practitioners within the industry that offer invaluable insight into current practice and opportunities for students to enhance their learning with work experience. The course has strong links with industry, including worldwide make up companies, that provide seminars and demonstrations throughout the year to promote employability within industry.

In addition, professional practice is a key focus to enable learners to focus on their specialism and craft a portfolio that is appropriate for the sector they wish to work in. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively with artists from a variety of disciplines to enhance their outcomes and forge professional connections, from both the University Centre, and the wider industry.
