For those who have completed a Foundation Degree in a relevant subject area, the BA (Hons) Top up course is designed to help you take your knowledge and skills in working with children, young people and their services to full honours degree level.

Our experienced and professionally qualified staff will support you throughout the course. The team all have industry experience and will help you to make the most of your studies on this intensive and rewarding course.

Our students benefit from studying in our dedicated multi million pound Hugh Baird University Centre. You will have access to learning resources at the Hugh Baird University Centre and at the University of Central Lancashire.

The BA (Hons) Children, School and Families Top up is focused on developing a range of skills for you to take into the work place in order to enhance your knowledge of working within various settings. Each week there will be a mixture of lectures, group discussion, debates and presentations designed to meet the learning styles of all class members. You will be encouraged to reflect on experiences from the workplace in order to maximise learning opportunities and discuss these experiences within a group setting. The assessments range from assignments, presentations, debates and portfolio development. You will also be given directed study and reading lists to help focus on specific areas in preparation for class. The aim of the BA (Hons) Top up is to develop the skills, strategies, and behaviours required to perform as confident, independent and active learners.

One year, full time.

Students completing their BA (Hons) Top up will be able to apply to study courses at postgraduate level.

Graduates may progress towards careers in teaching, most commonly going on to gain places on primary PGCE courses (teacher training) or increasingly, undertaking training in schools as part of the Schools Direct programme.

Other possible graduate destinations include advice and guidance roles; community support; social work roles; learning mentors or other pastoral roles in educational or community based contexts.

Entry Requirements

BA (Hons) Children Schools and families ( Graduate Practitioner)

Programme Specifications include minimum entry requirements, including academic qualifications, together with appropriate experience and skills required for entry to study. These criteria may be expressed as a range rather than a specific grade. Amendments to entry requirements may have been made after these documents were published and you should consult the University’s website for the most up to date information.

Students will be informed of their personal minimum entry criteria in their offer letter.
For standard entry into Year 1.

The minimum level of attainment required for entry to the start of standard courses leading to awards at first degree level is expressed in terms of UCAS Tariff Points. Please check the course website for the most up-to-date tariff requirements. Alternative qualifications and/or experience at an equivalent level are welcomed and will be equally considered.
 
Our typical offer is 96 - 112 UCAS Points. We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat
everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational
achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a
whole, including work experience and personal statement. General Studies accepted.

BTEC Extended Diploma:

Pass Access Course: 96 - 112 UCAS Points

  • International Baccalaureate Subjects: Distinction, Merit, Merit
  • BTEC Diploma: Distinction* Distinction - Distinction* Distinction*
  • Pass Diploma with 96 - 112 UCAS points from Higher Level
  • IELTS: 6.0 with no subscore lower than 5.5
  • GCSE: Five at grade C/4 including Maths & English or equivalent

In order to graduate with Early Graduate Practitioner Status students MUST have or attained the relevant Level 2 English and maths qualifications before completion of the degree programme.
Entry into year 3 of BA honours degree in Children, Schools and Families ( Graduate Practitioner) Top Up Students must:

  • hold a relevant Level 3 qualification and a work-based Foundation Degree (or equivalent) mapped to the ECS QAA Benchmark Statement
  • be completing a Top Up degree that is mapped on to the ECS QAA Benchmark Statement • be employment-based or have 25 days placement opportunities
  • have the relevant Level 2 English and maths qualifications.


Entry into year 3 of BA honours degree in Children, Schools and Families:

The following students may gain direct-access onto the final year of BA hons Children, Schools and Families:


1. Applicants who hold a UCLan Foundation Degree in Children, Young People and their Services will be admitted with advanced standing up to 240 credits (directly into Year 3).
2. Applicants who hold a Foundation Degree in a relevant discipline awarded by other higher education institutions will be considered positively - please enquire direct to the Course Leader
Consideration will also be given to non-traditional qualifications and relevant work experience. applicants are encouraged to produce evidence of their potential to benefit from the course.

Applicants who believe they may be eligible for Accreditation of Prior Certificated and/or Experiential Learning (APCL/APEL) for certain modules will be considered on an individual basis – please enquire direct to the Course Leader.

Enhanced DBS:

This course has a compulsory assessed placement modules Students on the course must meet Enhanced
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Should these checks prove
to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course, the offer of a place for that course may be
withdrawn.

Tuition fee loans cover university/college tuition fees and are paid direct to the university/college by Student Finance England, so you don’t need a pot of money up front.

They are available to all eligible students regardless of household income. The amount you pay back is dependent on how much you earn and not how much you owe and you won’t need to start paying them back until you are earning more than a certain amount.
