Course Details

Build a solid foundation for a career as a nail technician, with a Level 3 course at Hugh Baird College. With a focus on commercial skills and environmental sustainability, you’ll learn some of the most in-demand treatments of today. Put your best foot forward in the industry, with real-life experience and a broad, impressive skillset.

What will you learn?

Students begin by mastering the basics of manicures and pedicures, before moving on to advanced techniques such as gel polish, acrylics, BIAB, e-filing and nail art (glitter, jewels and embedding). You’ll get to learn from guest speakers, who deliver demonstrations to students throughout the year.

You’ll delve into some essential theory, such as personal health and well-being, the anatomy of nails, and how to support healthy nail growth.

Build your commercial skills in a real salon

Hugh Baird College is home to a set of commercial salons. You’ll get lots of opportunities to work from the nail bar in these salons, putting your skills to the test and building your confidence when working with real clients. These sessions widen your commercial know-how further, as you practise how to be a salon manager, promote your services and sell products.

Students that don’t have previous experience in the industry will also carry out work experience in an external salon.

How will you be assessed?

You’ll be visually assessed by tutors throughout the course. They’ll provide verbal and written feedback as you flex your skills on clients and other students. At the end of each unit, you’ll complete a final assessment and an online multiple-choice exam.

The Level 3 Nail Tech course also includes studying towards Maths and English GCSE if you don’t already have at least grade 4.

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you learners for employment/self-employment, you may choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:

  • Nail Technology
  • Salon Management

Nail Technican in:

  • Commercial salons
  • Destination/day spas
  • Nail bars or concessions
  • Retail and training
  • Cruise liners
  • Photographic or media work

Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.
