Course Details

A course that’s attracting more students than ever, Level 2 Architectural Carpentry and Joinery is the perfect next step for students that live and breathe the industry. Previously called ‘bench’, architectural joinery is all about building components from scratch. During this course at Hugh Baird College, you’ll advance your skills and get prepared for a career in the world of joinery.

What will you learn?

As you specialise in architectural joinery, you’ll get to grips with manufacturing doors, windows, stairs, units and other key building parts. You’ll gain an understanding of the entire process, from drawing components to marking them out and moulding them using timber.

Level 2 Architectural Joinery is all about building more technical skills, so you’ll work on complex joints such as gunstock and cross-lap joints, and get more exposure to manufacturing machines. On the theoretical side, you’ll learn how to produce drawings to building regulations, and how to understand any drawings and specifications that land on your bench.

Build your skills on-site

Hone your skills in Hugh Baird’s workshops that are decked out with top-of-the-range machines and bespoke work areas. Students will get lots of opportunities for additional practical training in an environment that mirrors real-world workshops.

Get connected with employers

Lots of local companies offering apprenticeships make Hugh Baird College their first port of call. That means students get first access to their ideal roles when they’re ready to take that next step. With non-stop support from your tutors, including additional support for special educational needs students, you’ll be ready for anything — whether that’s a paid job or a Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery Architectural course.

Is this course right for you?

We’re looking for students with a clear drive to work in the trades industry. This Level 2 qualification in Bench Joinery is best suited to students that have successfully completed their Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery. Those that want to jump straight into Level 2 will need a qualification or some industry experience.

How will you be assessed?

You’ll be assessed on both your practical skills and theory knowledge. Students will undertake a mix of tests throughout the year, which may include assignments, projects, case studies, practical exercises, question papers and portfolio building.

If you don’t already have grades 9-4 in Maths and English GCSEs, you can study for them with us.
