Apprenticeship Details

Learners on this programme will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to succeed in a property maintenance role in any industry, including:

  • Essential maintenance and repair skills

  • Introduction to individual occupations

  • Risk Assessment & Method Statements
  • Building Regulations / Legislation
  • Safe working practice, inc PPE, signage, barriers, access equipment, reinstatements
  • Safe use of tools and equipment
  • Safe isolation of Electrics 
  • Routine testing of safety and emergency equipment
  • Plan work sequencing
  • Regulatory compliance for selection and use of materials
  • Sustainability
  • Use of technical sources of information to solve problems
  • Report writing and record keeping

Painting and decorating skills:

  • Use painting and decorating skills to prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Painting
  • Mastic application and corking

Building services:

  • Maintenance and repair
  • Fault finding

  • Clearing blockages
  • Maintenance and repair of external drainage systems
  • Environmental and energy management systems

Carpentry and joinery skills:

  • Surface preparations
  • Floor repairs
  • Cutting around obstacles
  • Repairs to windows and doors
  • Maintain glazing units and associated fittings.

Plastering skills:

  • Plastering repairs inc surface preparation
  • Fixing and mixing materials and compounds

Tiling skills:

  • Tiling repairs, inc setting out
  • Surface Preparation
  • Cutting around obstacles
  • Flooring repairs

External maintenance:

  • Masonry
  • Roofing
  • Fencing and railings 
  • Groundwork / landscaping
  • Aged 16+
  • You must be employed within a relevant environment and demonstrate at least entry level skills in an initial Maths and English assessment.

Individual employers will set their own selection criteria for applicants. It is however recommended that candidates can demonstrate an interest in the occupation as well as an ability to work in an organised and methodical way to identify and solve problems; also demonstrate an ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Apprentices without level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 prior to taking their apprenticeship end-point assessment.  For those with an education, health and care plan or legacy statement, the English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification are an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language.

Most apprenticeships take between 12 - 18 months to complete.

Yes, you will be paid by your employer for the duration of your apprenticeship. You will be paid at least the government’s minimum wage rate for apprentices, £3.70. A lot of employers pay their apprentices a higher hourly wage than the minimum rate.

This is ultimately up to your employers, but more than 90% of apprentices stay in employment after their course ends.
