Spa Wars at Hugh Baird College

Beauty Therapy students at Hugh Baird College were treated to a visit from ex-student and well known Beauty Therapist, Danny Matthews earlier this week.

Danny studied at the college from 2000 to 2004 and at the time, it is thought he was the first and only male Beauty Therapy student in Liverpool.

Since leaving the college, his career has rocketed and has gone from strength to strength. He has opened his own beauty salon in Crewe, has lectured at a number of colleges and has also appeared as a contestant on ITV3 reality show, Spa Wars.

Danny explained to the group the different ways that students can gain experience that will make them a valuable asset to employers. He also raised the group’s awareness to the different career opportunities they could progress to as a result of successfully completing their Beauty Therapy qualifications.

Before departing, Danny also spoke with the group about the importance of staying abreast of the industry’s latest trends, so as not to fall behind your competitors. The group spoke about trends that are current today including the Wow Brow and chemical peels.

Kelly Nicholson, Study Programme Coordinator, said:

“We’d like to thank Danny for coming to speak to the students today, the visit was inspirational and gave our leaners a well-rounded understanding of the possible career outcomes within Beauty Therapy.”

Hugh Baird College Level 2 Beauty Therapy student, Kayleigh Smith, said:

“Danny was amazing! He really helped me to realise how I can start my career within the industry, it was very inspiring to see someone doing so well after leaving our college.”

Danny summed his talk up saying:

“I loved coming back to Hugh Baird College, this is where it all started for me. If just a few of the learners take on board some of the points I made today and they help them carve out a successful career in the industry, then I will be very happy.”
