Hugh Baird College hosted the annual Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year Competition last week. In total, 9 Level 1 and 2 Painting and Decorating students from Hugh Baird College, PM Training, Riverside and Hopwood Hall College went head to head in a hard fought competition.

The prestigious national competition gives students an opportunity to showcase their skills to their potential employers, tests their capabilities and gives them experience working towards a detailed and challenging design. The students were each given the same design which included various colours and shapes, they then had to interpret the job specification, prepare the surfaces, select the most suitable equipment and then apply the paint to their designated work area.

With all students producing work of a high standard, judges from Johnstone’s Paint were hard pushed to select a winner. However, after much deliberation, first place went to PM Training student Jordan Harrison with a close second place going to Hugh Baird College student Rosena Gracie.

Hugh Baird College, Level 1 Painting and Decorating student Rosena Gracie said:

I am really glad that I took part in the competition, it was a great experience for me to be able to test my skills and meet new people. I am so happy that I came second, I would like to thank all of my lecturers for all of their support to get me to this standard.

Hugh Baird College Painting and Decorating Tutor, Mark Dillon, said:

On behalf of Hugh Baird College I would like to say thank-you to Johnstone’s for hosting their annual competition with us again this year. It’s always great to see our students networking with other students and industry professionals. The work produced was of an exceptional standard and I am sure that all those who took place have a bright future in the industry ahead of them.
