Frequently Asked Questions
We've put together some answers to questions that we are often asked. We hope these help!
We will invite you to one of our Admissions Evenings. These happen throughout the academic year and do exactly what they say on the tin! You will be invited into college on a weekday evening and you will find out more about your course and have an informal chat with our subject tutors.
You will receive a letter through the post with your Admissions Evening date and time.
We can rearrange an appointment for you and offer you an alternative date.
Please contact our Admissions Team by calling 0151 353 4542/4548 or emailing admissions@hughbaird.ac.uk.
Please bring any actual or predicted GCSE results with you.
Yes you can! We welcome anyone who would like to come along with you.

There is no need to wear anything formal - wear something that you feel comfortable in.
You will be welcomed, registered, and directed to our presentation area. There will be plenty of people around who will be able to help and support you.
- There will be a short presentation about the college given by a senior member of the College team.
- You will then meet a course tutor who will take you to the area of the College where you will study your chosen subject. Please be aware that there may be a number of people from your chosen subject area.
- A discussion with the course tutor will take place.
- You will receive an offer dependent on your suitability for the course.
- You can find out more information about financial support.
- You will be with us for up to 1 hour 30 minutes.
Yes please, we'd like you to attend the presentation as it gives you up to date information about the College and what happens during the Admissions Evening.
We have team members from different areas of the College who are available at the start of the evening. If you arrive early, then you will have the opportunity to speak to representatives from;
Learner Support Team
This team are there to support students with a wide range of special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Speak to them about student support packages and the types of support available.
Careers Team
If you would like some independent advice and guidance on the best next steps for you our trained advisors can help with this.
Financial Support
You can get information about the bursaries and financial support packages available. If you are aged 19 or over then you can also enquire about funding for your course and the Advanced Learner Loan.
Hugh Baird University Centre
If you are aged 19 or older you may already have the qualifications and/or experience that you need to progress on to a degree level course at our University Centre. Lecturers will be on hand to speak to you about this option.
There are a number of outcomes that will happen at an Admissions Evening. You can receive an unconditional offer, a conditional offer, or be referred:
Unconditional offer
An unconditional offer means that, based on the information you have given us, we believe you already meet the entry requirements for the course.
Conditional offer
A conditional offer means that you have a place so long as you achieve the entry requirements for the course.
Referred
If you have been referred, then this could mean a few different options:
- If you have been referred to another course, we will arrange another Admissions Event for you to speak to a course tutor from the other subject area.
- If you have been referred to the Apprenticeship Team, we will forward your details on to the team who will give you a call about the Apprenticeship courses we offer.
- If you have been referred to our Careers Team, we will forward your details on to our Careers Team who will give you a call about options available to you.
You will receive your timetable when you complete your enrolment with us during the summer months.
We will invite you into the College to enrol during the summer months:
- Unconditional offer holders will be invited in from June.
- Conditional offer holders will be invited in from August.
Please be aware that spaces on courses are offered (subject to suitability and qualification evidence) on a first come first served basis.
The New Student Festival is an ideal chance for you to get a taste of your course and experience life as a Hugh Baird College student. If you are unable to attend, do not worry, it will not affect your offer of a place at the College.
This is no problem at all!
If you are leaving school this year and you know your predicted GCSE grades, please make a note of these and bring them along the Admissions Evening. If you don't know your predicted grades, don't worry. When you come along to enrol, you can bring your GCSE results.
If you are not leaving school this year, don't worry! We can attempt to access your results on a national database when you come along to enrol.
Please still attend the College as we can often find you a different course to study.
Unconditional offer
An unconditional offer means that, based on the information you have given us, we believe you already meet the entry requirements for the course.

If you are aged 16 – 18 then you do not have to pay any course fees.
If you are aged 19 or over then you may be liable to pay for your course fees, however, there may be opportunities to help you reduce or fully support your costs. These will be looked at based on your personal circumstances, such as where you live and the course you are applying for. There will be advisors available at our Admissions Evenings who will be able to help you.
You will also find further information at www.hughbaird.ac.uk/financial-support/finance-funding-adults.

You will need to bring your GCSE results and any other qualifications required to enrol onto your chosen course as well as some form of ID such as a passport, or birth certificate.
You will still need to attend the College on the date and/or times that have been sent to you, to secure your place on the course.
There are times that we must start placing people on to waiting lists as we have had a large number of applications for certain courses. We will inform you if any places become available and ask you to come into the College to complete your enrolment.
If you have come to enrol and been informed that we are running a waiting list, then we will inform you if a place becomes available.
