The Health and Social Care Foundation Entry Year enables students to continue from their Level 3 studies, or presents an opportunity to study at degree level for students who have relevant work experience. It is suitable for those who are not yet fully prepared for Level 4 study, to be supported in accessing a foundation degree and, ultimately, an honours degree in Health and Social Care.

The main focus of the foundation year is to develop knowledge and understanding of Health and Social Care concepts, theories and practices, whilst also developing the academic study skills required for undergraduate level study. The course is designed to encourage students who work in the field of health and social care to develop their professional skills in a reflective manner. Students have the opportunity to put this into practice by attending placements within the sector which will allow them to implement transferable and employability skills whilst applying theory to practice.

Teaching and learning on the course will be delivered through a range of lectures, workshops, research seminars, group work and independent research.

Assessment will be coursework based, via a combination of essays, portfolio work, presentations and workbooks.

What topics/modules are covered?

All modules will be delivered through a range of teaching and learning strategies, including:

  • Evidence-based assignments
  • Individual oral presentations
  • Essays
  • Group presentation
  • Workbook
  • Guest speakers

Students will study 6 modules, across 2 semesters:

Semester 1:

  • NUC003: Academic writing and studying in H&SC (20 credits)
  • NUC004: Learning development and using ICT to present information (20 credits)
  • NUC005: Developing skills for delivering H&SC (20 credits)

Semester 2:

  • NUC007: Measuring health and wellbeing (20 credits)
  • NUC001: Applied anatomy and physiology (20 credits)
  • NUC006: Developing professional skills for delivering H&SC (20 credits)

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements for this course are 160 tariff points at A Level or equivalent, 5 passes at GCSE or above, a minimum proficiency in English of IELTS 6 or equivalent. Consideration will be given to applicants who have equivalent vocational or experiential learning gained within a Health and Social Care environment. All applicants are interviewed.

What can I do if I complete this course?

Successful completion of this course leads to guaranteed progression on to Year 1 of a related Foundation Degree programme at the Hugh Baird University Centre:

Alternatively, you may have the option of progressing onto a related degree programme at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

You don’t need to pay your tuition fees up front – Tuition Fee Loans cover university or college tuition fees and are paid direct to the university or college, by Student Finance England. They are available to all eligible students regardless of household income. The amount you pay back is dependent on how much you earn and not how much you owe and you won’t need to start paying them back until you are earning more than £21,000 per year. Student Loans will also help to support your living costs.

  • £6,000 per year

The standard part time tuition fee rate for 2017/18 and 2018/19 for Home and EU students is:

  • £1,000 per 20 credit module
