Art, Design, Fashion & Textiles

The Art, Design, Fashion & Textiles Department offers a full range of courses at Craft and Professional level including General Art and Design, 3D Design, Graphics, Fashion and Textiles.

We specialise in teaching and developing student’s creative thinking and practical application. Our courses offer the exploration and experimentation of a wide range of skills and techniques and promote the production of independent research, design and development of a range of 2D/3D outcomes. As well as the opportunities to develop personal and professional skills all courses are embedded with key components such as drawing development, historical and contextual understanding, ideas and concepts and the visual communication and realisation of Art and Design.

At Hugh Baird College we have responded quickly to the demand for new skills in the creative arts industry, for example the 3D Design course has links with some of retails high profile stores which enables the curriculum to respond to the ever changing working environment. The course also has strong links with local and national universities and reflects the demands expected for Higher Education progression.

Students could progress directly into higher education or via a pre-degree foundation programme in one of the following subject areas; Photography, Graphic Design, Interactive Media, Fine Art, 3D Design, Textile and Craft.

If students want to go straight into employment they could work in a range of career areas including interior design; fashion production / retail; fabric and textile design; graphic design; or freelance photography.

There are no formal qualifications for our Level 1 courses.

These study programmes have been designed to prepare you to progress to study at Level 2 or to employment. These programmes not only give an insight to your chosen vocational area, but also give you the opportunity to undertake work experience and other activities that will prepare you quickly to get a job or to move on to higher levels in your chosen field. These programmes also include the development on maths and English skills.

You will need to have successfully completed a relevant Level 1 course or have 4 GCSEs at grade G (new grading system: 1) or above or have industry related experience.

We will also work with you to help you develop maths and English skills.
