Students learn employability skills from Barclays

Traineeship students from Hugh Baird College learned valuable employability skills this week when LifeSkills visited the College to deliver workshops.

LifeSkills, created with Barclays, is designed to inspire young people to get the skills they need for a better future. They work with tutors, parents and businesses to help young people with advice on job hunting, developing personal skills and gaining work experience.

The twice yearly visits from LifeSkills are organised by the College’s Traineeship Coordinator, Monica Powell, and this time the opportunity was open to Travel and Tourism students as well as the Traineeship group. The workshops included activities and discussions around building confidence and resilience, improving interview success and communication techniques.

Monica explained:

“As part of their Traineeship course at Hugh Baird College, the students are all working towards Level 2 Employability Skills as well as completing Functional Skills Maths and English. The partnership we have with LifeSkills means that every group of traineeship students now attend one of their workshops. They get a lot out of it and it helps them to work towards the ultimate goal of progressing to an apprenticeship, employment or further education. Enrichment activities such as the LifeSkills workshops, give the students a great foundation on which to build. Our Traineeship students also attend a work placement for a hundred hours over the eighteen weeks of the programme so the employability themed workshops by LifeSkills are good preparation for achieving their qualification.”

Traineeship student, Ashleigh Samson said:

“The workshop was good. They told us how to prepare for interviews and what the different types of interviews are. I think I’ll be much more confident to go for interviews now because I know what to expect and how to make a good impression.”
