Barbering Level 2 and 3

What will I study? 

The Apprenticeship framework is made up of the following:

1.         Barbering NVQ (Level 2 or 3)
2.         Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication (at Level 1 or 2)
3.         Employers’ Rights and Responsibilities Workbook (ERR)
4.         Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Delivery Method

An assessor will work with the apprentice on a one-to-one basis and/or group basis. Apprentices will be visited each month at work and will also be able to contact the assessor between visits.

Course Structure 

During the Level 2 Apprenticeship, the Apprentice will assist senior Barbers in the salon by carrying out duties that will include:

  • Preparing for treatments and services to be carried out by senior members of staff
  • Providing shampoo and conditioning treatments and services to clients
  • Advising and consulting with clients, initially under the supervision of a senior Barber
  • Assisting with reception duties, meeting and greeting clients, operating the appointment system, responding to clients' requests face to face and on the telephone, taking clients' payments
  • Mixing and applying chemical treatments, such as colours, to clients  under the supervision of a senior barber
  • Using basic techniques to dry and style the hair of clients initially under  the supervision of a senior barber
  • Cutting facial hair
  • Providing refreshments to clients and ensuring their comfort in the salon
  • Working as a team member to ensure a safe, clean and tidy working  environment
  • Attending in-house training sessions
  • Creating basic patterns in hair

Those on a Level 3 Apprenticeship will initially be classed as a junior Barber and will take responsibility for their own clients while working towards the completion of NVQ Level 3 Diploma and other components of the framework. On completion of the Level 3 Diploma, the job role will be that of a Barber.

During the Level 3 Apprenticeship the duties will include:

  • Creatively cut using a combination of barbering techniques
  • Shaving
  • Face massage
  • Advising and consulting with clients
  • Applying chemical treatents such as perming, relaxing, straightening and colouring using a varitey of techniques
  • Supporting Apprentice Barbers
  • Ensuring repeat custom through client care skills so that a clientele is developed
  • Working as a team member to ensure a safe, clean and tidy working environment
  • Attending in-house training sessions

Up to 12 to 18 months, part-time
