College Chair retiring after twenty eight years

After twenty eight years of dedicated service to Hugh Baird College, Jim Brown is retiring as Chair of the Corporation, handing over the baton to current Vice Chair, David Crosby.

Having begun his association with Hugh Baird College as a co-opted member on the Audit Committee, Jim became a full member of the Corporation in 2008 and has served as Chair since 2011. He has shared both the knowledge he gained as a university student on Merseyside and his experience from more than 35 years working in mainstream Civil Service. In 2014, he was invited to attend the Royal Garden Party in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of further education governance and the promotion of standards in public life spanning more than twenty years.

During Jim’s leadership of the Corporation, the College has developed an award-winning University Centre, Port Academy Liverpool, Special Education Needs provision at Thornton College and full time courses for 14-16 year olds at the 14-16 College, part of the ground-breaking Career Colleges initiative.

Speaking of his time with Hugh Baird College, Jim said:

“Further and Higher Education has been very important to me in furthering my own career and I have always felt people should have every opportunity to fulfil their ambitions through education. Hugh Baird College and its highly skilled Leadership and Management Team have an excellent record of providing first class facilities, employer led training and apprenticeships and a wide range of courses and progression opportunities for the people of Sefton and the wider Liverpool City Region.”
“I am particularly proud of our collaborative work with Sefton Council to establish and run Thornton College, as well as our association with Career Colleges to establish the L20 Hotel School and 14-16 College. Following the area based review of further education in Merseyside, I feel the time is now right for me to step down and I wish the incoming Chair every success in his new role.”

Moving into the role as Chair of the Corporation is current Vice Chairman, David Crosby. David spent more than thirty years in operations, quality and human resources management with the Royal Mail Group, starting with Royal Mail Engineering Services and progressing to senior management and director positions with Vehicle Services. In 2003, he set up his own management consultancy and has worked with a number of blue chip organisation providing change management and project management direction and advice. Primarily providing advice and assessment services for organisations working towards or being assessed against quality standards, he has recently contributed in the development of a new Leadership and Management Standard.

David joined the Hugh Baird Corporation in 2009 and has served as Vice Chair for the past three years. He has been an active member of a number of committees and chaired both the Remuneration and the Quality and Standards committees. He is currently also a member of the Post 16 Area Review Transition Board.
