Outdoor Education – BTEC Extended Diploma – Level 3

Hugh Baird College is the only college or training provider in Liverpool or Sefton to offer this course. The course is designed to help students build the knowledge and skills needed when working in the outdoor industry. You will learn and develop skills related to outdoor education activities and expeditions, alternative pursuits for outdoor education, land-based and water-based skills, and environmental studies for the outdoor education industry.

The programme also includes studying maths and English towards GCSE grade A*-C (new grading system: 9-4) if you do not already have these grades. There are eighteen units to be completed over two years. Some of these will be practical-based and include outdoor trips and expeditions.

What topics/modules are covered?

  • Principles and Practices in outdoor adventure
  • Equipment and Facilities for outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Impact and Sustainability in outdoor adventure
  • Environmental Education for outdoor adventure
  • Skills for water and land based outdoor activities.
  • Leading water and land based outdoor activities.
  • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in sport.
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions

There will also be the opportunity to gain training and assessment for the following awards (depending on experience):

  • BCU 2 and 3 star awards (Sea, WW kayak and Canoe)
  • BCU FSRT (safety and rescue course)
  • BCU/UKCC Level 1 Paddle sports coach
  • MTE - Climbing Wall Award
  • Basic Expedition Leader
  • Outdoor First Aid

What are the entry requirements?

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade C (new grading system: 4) or above


  • A relevant Level 2 qualification


  • Industry related experience

Should you not have or not expect to obtain the grades stated above, or not have relevant industry related experience, the College would still welcome your application for this course as this will enable us to identify whether this course is, in fact, the right course for you or whether another course may be more appropriate.

Study Programme

If you are aged 16-19, this qualification will form a substantial part of your study programme. The study programme has been designed to ensure that young people are fully equipped and ready to move on to the world of work or higher level courses. In addition to your main qualification, will you also get the opportunity to undertake relevant and CV bolstering work experience out in your chosen industry. You will also be supported through maths and English qualifications.
