Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing - BTEC Extended Diploma - Level 3

The course will prepare you to study at degree or HND level or you could gain full time employment in the sector. This course is particularly suited to students who want to follow a career in the design and maintenance of electrical, electronic, mechanical or computerised equipment. Students have progressed to leading universities, studying Mechanical, Civil and Electronic Engineering. Alternatively you can progress onto advanced apprenticeships.

The skills acquired are transferable and will enable you to enter a diverse range of careers and employment. This course combines an academic background with a strong practical content and is ideal if you have a keen interest in the theory and application of engineering. You will undertake projects and assessments that are based on realistic work place situations.

The programme also includes studying Maths and English towards GCSE grade A*-C (new grading system: 9-4) if you do not already have these grades.

What topics/modules are covered?

You will study 17 modules which include six core modules:

  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Mechanical principles and applications
  • Mathematics
  • Communications
  • Health and safety
  • An engineering project

You will also study 11 specialist modules, which include:

  • Precision engineering
  • Electronic devices and circuits
  • Commercial aspects
  • Computer aided drafting
  • Fabrication processes and technology

What are the entry requirements?

In order to qualify for this course, you will need:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade C (new grading system: 4) or above including maths, English and science

or

  • 2 GCSEs at grade C (new grading system: 4) or above in maths, English and engineering

or

  • BTEC Diploma – Level 2 at merit or above

Study Programme

If you are aged 16-19, this qualification will form a substantial part of your study programme. The study programme has been designed to ensure that young people are fully equipped and ready to move on to the world of work or higher level courses. In addition to your main qualification, will you also get the opportunity to undertake relevant and CV bolstering work experience out in your chosen industry.
